Kids BJJ & Martial Arts — Salem, NH
Confidence, discipline, and real self-defense for kids — in a safe, structured, fun environment.
The kids program at Off Your Back BJJ Academy teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and foundational martial arts in a structured environment built specifically for children. Classes are run by patient, experienced coaches who understand how kids learn — through engagement, repetition, and encouragement, not pressure or intimidation. Every child is met at their level and guided forward at a pace that builds real skill and genuine confidence.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is uniquely suited for children because it teaches control, not aggression. Kids learn how to move their bodies, manage contact with another person, and stay calm under pressure — skills that carry far beyond the mat. Kids who train BJJ consistently tend to become better students, better teammates, and more self-assured young people. Parents regularly tell us it's the best decision they've made for their child.
Our kids curriculum covers BJJ fundamentals alongside striking concepts and self-defense awareness. Children progress through a belt and stripe system that gives them clear goals and the satisfaction of earned achievement. Classes are kept small so coaches can give individual attention to every student. Your child's first class is completely free — come see the environment for yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions
What age can kids start BJJ?
We accept children starting around age 5 and up into the kids program at Off Your Back BJJ Academy. Younger children can start as long as they are able to follow basic instructions and participate in a group class setting. Contact us to discuss your child's age and readiness.
Is BJJ safe for kids?
Yes — Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the safest martial arts for children. It is ground-based and non-striking in the traditional sense, so there is no punching or kicking in BJJ sparring. Kids learn control, not aggression. Our coaches enforce safety rules strictly and the environment is supervised at all times.
Will BJJ help my child with bullying?
Yes, in two important ways. First, kids who train BJJ develop genuine self-defense capability and the confidence that comes with it — bullies typically avoid children who carry themselves with confidence. Second, BJJ teaches children to stay calm under pressure, which helps them de-escalate situations before they become physical.
How often should kids train BJJ?
Most kids in our program train 1-2 times per week, which is enough to see consistent improvement without overwhelming school schedules. Kids who train more frequently progress faster, but regular attendance at even one class per week builds real skill over time.
Do kids need any equipment to start?
No equipment is needed for the free trial class — just comfortable athletic clothes. Once enrolled, kids will need a gi (kimono) for BJJ classes, which we can help you source. We will walk you through everything after your child's first class.
Is there a belt system for kids BJJ?
Yes. Our kids program uses a belt and stripe system with clearly defined requirements for each level. Children earn stripes on their belts as they develop skills and demonstrate the right attitude on the mat. Promotions are given by coaches based on merit — earning a new rank means something at Off Your Back BJJ.
