NOOOO! Old rituals such as bowing before entering the mats, having to
ask to go get water, having to face a wall if you need to tie your belt,
do not exist here at OYB BJJ Academy.
Do I need to call instructors Professor Sensei or Master?
: NO! Please call me by my first name as well as any assistant coaches.
If you want to call an instructor Coach " their first name" that's
fine, but please no Sensei Master or Professor.
What can I expect on my first day?
: On your first day, you will first sign a waiver, and get a quick
intro into what BJJ / submission grappling is. You will be introduced to
the team, and take part in a good portion of the class training. Before
entering the mats to train, we will assess your current physical
health, and any past experience. Any injuries or limitations you have,
please let us know, as each student has their own curriculum based on
their abilities. Over the next few classes you will engage more and more
with your teammates in drilling the techniques being taught. When it
comes to live rolling we don't rush anyone into it, but we do ease them
into live rolling in a way that is effective , fun, and safe!

How does one advance in rank in BJJ?:
BJJ is a sophisticated martial art that is always advancing. We do not
have a set schedule or count hours per-say in regards to training, we
assess each student from Day 1 on and monitor their progression, we do
have a base curriculum for white belts as well. As students progress
they advance in rank by getting stripes to colored belts.
4 stripes per belt and the belt ranks are
White, Blue, Purple, Brown, Black
